Hermeneutics

The ways people interpret the Bible cause unneeded suffering and avoidable stupidities. I’ve often said that if I believed everything I’ve heard from preachers, I’d be a raving lunatic. Just read the Bible for its plain sense, some people say. Yet a 21st-century view of a passage can be very different from […]

The Creational Design of Male Headship

Some heirarchicalists teach that male headship was instituted by God as a part of creation and must therefore be permanent for all times and places. Even if headship were mentioned in the creation story of Genesis, it does not follow that it must be permanent. In Genesis 2:2-3 God creates a seventh day […]

Jesus’ Maleness

Romans 5:19 says, “For just as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous.” Some theologians have argued that it was necessary for Jesus to be male so that he could pay the right sort of penalty to overcome Adam’s […]

Equally Created

The Danvers Statement states that “both Adam and Eve were created in God’s image, equal before God as persons and and distinct in their manhood and womanhood.” Note that this heirarchical/complementarian basic statement of belief does not say that men and women were equally created in the image of God, but are only equal […]

A Letter to God

“Dear God,
Are boys better than girls?
I know you are one,
but try to be fair.”
From Eric Marshall and Stuart Hample, eds., Children’s Letters to God (New York: Pocket Books, 1966); quoted in Reader’s Digest, March 1967, p. 97; quoted in Ruth A. Tucker, Women in the Maze: Questions & Answers on Biblical Equality (Downers Grove, Illinois: […]

Our Charismatic Sisters

My son-in-law sent me a Web link to the Assemblies of God Women in Ministry page. While pentacostals and charismatics also struggle with the truth of egalitarian approaches to church and family, there has for a very long time been a strong support of women within their churches and theology that many evangelical churches […]

Conference Ruminations

To this point, the CBE blogging team has been providing summaries and some personal reactions to various seminars and sessions of the 2005 annual conference of the Christians for Biblical Equality. Perhaps it is time to provide some analysis and personal takes on the conference experience.
This was my first CBE conference. It was […]

Put the TNIV online

I would urge the TNIV people to put the TNIV on BibleWorks and other Bible software programs and also on Biblegateway.com so that churches and Internet users can use it!

F.F. Bruce

There is not a Biblical scholar who has a more solid Evangelical reputation than F.F. Bruce. Even the Evangelical hierarchicalists wonder how someone who had so much right could go so wrong when it came to gender equality.
Now that Andy has recommended some resources and mentioned an F.F. Bruce article, I would like to […]

Tough words in disputed texts

I asked Dr. Craig Keener about his current thoughts on “headship.” He noted that “headship” has a range in meanings in the ancient sources and possibly doesn’t mean “source” as the old CBE literature strongly advocated. But Paul does not use “head” in a strong hierarchical way either. Craig is still reading […]
