Do we obey all commands in the Bible?

Craig Keener, in his workshop, pointed out the need for interpretation and looking at context. He asked us if we should obey all the commands in the Bible. What about: “Go to Troas and get the cloak” (2 Ti 4:13) or “Take up an offering for the church in Jerusalem.” No, we take into account the situation.

Ephesians 5: “Wives submit to their husbands.” Some say just wives should submit. The text also specifically encourages husbands to love their wives. Under the same reasoning that just wives need to submit, only husbands need to love their spouses. Rather, we need to read this section in context and notice that earlier in the chapter all people are urged to both “love one another” (5:2) and “submit to one another” (5:21).
