Why study ancient Judaism?

I asked Dr. Craig Keener, CBE workshop presenter, why more New Testament scholars are not writing on gender equality (both pro and con). He said that the vast percentage of NT scholars do not know much about New Testament backgrounds or ancient Judaism so they are not equipped for these sort of discussions. He mentioned E.P. Sanders, one of his professors, telling his students at various times that he disagreed with so-and-so big-name scholar, “who by the way knows nothing about ancient Judaism.” This is why Craig wrote the IVP Bible Backgrounds Commentary (New Testament). It makes me want to get this book and make good use of it. From my vantage point as a pastor and professor, people are very interested in this sort of information – hence the popularity of the preaching of Rob Bell, the teaching of Ray VanderLaan, and the rock star status of N.T. Wright.

Wow! It seems strange that NT scholars scholars would be so weak on background and culture. Even, I, the lowly Seminary student must do extensive research on culture and historical background every time I do an IBS for a class! Now I understand why it’s hard to find good material - - apparently nobody’s writing it. My last IBS was on 1 Peter 3:1-7 and it was tough finding material on the contemporary culture and society of the people Peter was writing to.
